Avalon Waterways' 361-foot-long and 36-foot-wide "Suite Ship," Avalon Visionary, is a luxurious option for river cruising along the Rhine and Danube. Launched in 2012, it carries 128 passengers in 64 cabins, and boasts dark-wood finishes with pops of color and fun art. Of the cabins, 52 are one-room suites that are 15% larger than the industry average, with beds facing the river and 11-foot-by-7-foot sliding-glass doors that turn the accommodations into rooms with open-air balconies. Meals are delicious and varied, with buffet-style breakfast and lunch, and four-course dinners with a local focus and Avalon Fresh dishes. The smaller size of Avalon Visionary also comes in handy, as it can sail all the way to Luxembourg on the Moselle, while larger ships are forced to stop in Bernkastel. All in all, this ship gives a boutique hotel experience with its modern decor and comfortable amenities.
